The project aims to approach the space with a Minimalist design , it involves using the bare essentials to create a simple and uncluttered space. Mies van der Rohe ‘s famous quote: “Less is more,” defines the essence of our approach. The design is about straight lines, smooth curves, simple shapes, and flat planes. We try to keep it flat, smooth, and neat, but it is also about texture. By introducing varied textures to our surfaces, while maintaining the same colour, gives a “variety within unity.” Storage, shoe cabinet, TV consoles, passage to staircase, bar are placed and organized along the same plane and hidden behind carefully modulated panels. Thus making our space vibrant and elegant with a calm and tranquil spirit.
It is all about neatness, purity, and neutral colours. Natural light complements the white and light-coloured surfaces, making our space feel comfortable, warm and spacious. It also shows the true colours of the walls, floors, and furniture, retaining the true essence of the minimalist style.
The exterior also decidedly paired back on excessive elements, multiple openings are grouped to form a singular aperture instead of discreet elements. The curves left over from the old house, were rationalised and erased from the renovation. The challenge is to retain the existing structure of the house but to give it a fresh and timeless look. It is done in the same minimalist approach – less is more. From colours, materials, to lines, to keep it simple and un-clattered.
Large format grey colour ceramic tiles (Italgraniti UP_STONE) were chosen for the living and ground level spaces. These tiles had to be indented and shipped from Italy. They were chosen for their neutral colour and vein and the physical property as the existing floor of the house was constructed more than 30 years ago.
Natural Oak Laminate from EDL was chosen for the wall cladding and ceiling cladding. It was client’s preference to select the lighter tone interior. Particularly to invoke a clam and serene ‘Japanese’ zen feel.
Extensive use of engineered oak timber floor for the stairs, and bedrooms on the 2nd floor.
