The Covarrubias City Council intends to install the Visitor Reception Center in the old school building. Due to the reduced budget (200 euros per square meter), a minimum intervention was chosen: the structure, the facades and the roof were maintained, and only the interior and the entrances were reformed. For this, all the interior partitions are eliminated and the impressive interior basilica space is recovered. An empty room to carry out all kinds of activities related to tourism and culture.
The main façade is stripped from the inside, leaving the brick exposed to breathe, and the opposite façade is dressed with a paneling of OSB board and translucent polycarbonate. Some doors allow access to the small rooms at the back.
Natural and artificial lighting is studied so that each type of light correctly accompanies each activity: concerts, exhibitions, talks, wine tastings ... The south-facing windows are closed with simple steel carpentry, which allow to obtain great views of the town and provide a great contrast of light and shadow on the polished concrete floor. Polycarbonate doors and paneling are backlit for ambient light at night. Hanging lamps provide general lighting.
Finally, access from the outdoor car park is marked with a large lintel made with reused steel plates from a nearby agricultural scale. The same flats are used to build the new access staircase, which contrasts with the façade. They are read as two superimposed objects, clearly differentiated.
