Expansion Norwegian Radium Hospital

Henning Larsen as Architects

The extension of the Norwegian Radium Hospital comprises 8,000 m2. The building is designed by Henning Larsen Architects and completed in 2008. Henning Larsen Design is behind the interior design of the building as well as the tender documents.

The extension comprises facilities for the radiation therapy, a new built research institute as well as a development plan for the entire hospital. The Institute for Cancer Research is the leading research institute in Europe and was designed by Henning Larsen Architects between 2006-2009. It consists of two buildings, one for research and one for treatment of patients.

The Institute features laboratories, workstations and a central atrium and is characterised by a high degree of flexibility and innovation. The seven different research departments can be converted into smaller or larger units according to the various research demands and have all been designed to accommodate challenging technical installations in the future.

The design of the workspaces is based on user surveys and on facilitating knowledge sharing and the flow between laboratories and workstations. More informal meeting facilities and a high hygiene standard for new materials were strong user requests and have therefore been incorporated into the design strategy.
