Competition for the Extension of the World Trade Organization Building in Geneva

andres carosio architekten ag as Architects

Located directly on the Lake of Geneva the Wold Trade Organization (WTO) wanted to enlarge their head office with a new building to accommodate offices, library, cafeteria and new parking space.

Our proposal is a building with a very compact geometry which trough its proportions integrates the existing main building without overpowering the surrounding park. A massive pedestal, a transparent and higher ceiled “piano nobile” housing the public functions (cafeteria, library, main hall) and three office floors. The upper volume has a double facade: a curtain wall skin on witch is superposed an exterior structural framework inspired by the surrounding park. This external structure generates an interior floor space free of columns and totally flexible.

The building envelope and the installations infrastructure (AC, ventilation etc.) conform to the latest ecology and durability requirements (Swiss Minergie P Standard). The building cooling is achieved through the use of the lake water and a heat exchange system. Hot water and heating are provided by solar panels on the roof.

Site implantation and access are clearly defined and simplified not to compete but to integrate the existing and nearby situated neoclassical main building.
