FREESPACE - XVI Biennale Architettura

Paredes Pedrosa Arquitectos as Architects

The exhibition responds to freespace, the theme of the Biennale, in which 71 international teams were invited to participate. This opportunity is more than just the exhibition of projects and built objects, it is the opportunity to think about space as the place that surprises and excites us the most in architecture. The space understood as an invention of three-dimensional forms that show their ability to provide more than is necessary by suggesting the possibility of reviewing the way in which they are used.

The impressive empty space of the Arsenale had to be filled with this thought and with this aim six vertical modules of equal dimensions (66x205x375 cm.) were built in which the interior spaces of the six exposed buildings are represented at 1:30 scale. These interiors are built by successive sections cut up in wood panels. The modules with a zigzag arrangement in the Arsenal nave fill up the void between three of its columns, with three modules per intercolumn. A 1:200 scale model floats in each module, illuminated in its own interior space. The vision of the 70-meter-long Arsenal nave allows the six structures to be surrounded and referenced to the long central corridor. In addition, the entrance of natural light from the windows illuminates the modules against the bare brick background in chiaroscuro. The exhibition is completed with 6 large photographs of the freespaces located in such way to scale the visitor with the six analyzed spaces.
