House of Rex

Veverka Architects as Architects

The clients requested a simple loft-like living space, floating above it is a small study, accessible by a spiral stair. Three levels of bedrooms cascade down the hill and terminate at the rear garden.

The site is a steep downhill San Francisco lot, 25' wide and 125' deep. Functional zoning became a challenge due to site constraints and the demanding requirements of the San Francisco Planning Department. (The original design was approved by planning staff and then rejected by the Planning Commission.) A series of design iterations followed before the permit was granted. The house as completed has been enthusiastically received in the neighborhood.

Behind the modest, minimalist exterior lies a dramatic interior space which maximizes the sense of openness while featuring views of downtown San Francisco. A light and airy loft, balanced on two steel beams, hovers above the living area. Originally designed as an adult getaway, two children later it houses toy trucks and other playthings. The children's bedrooms combine sleeping and study areas and each has a dramatic view. The lowest level was designed as a flexible space - a sliding panel can close it off for use as a sleeping room. There is space allotted for a future elevator.
