A Hands-On Approach to Industrial Technology

HED as Architects

Established in 1957 to fulfill growing demand for specialized and technical education opportunities for the Greater Lansing’s industrial workforce Lansing Community College (LCC) has continued its careers emphasis and, in support of this mission, maintains a technology-rich environment, fostering “user-” vs. classroom-level information technology skills.

To continue this vision, LCC leveraged the 100+ year manufacturing and industrial portfolio of Harley Ellis Devereaux (HED) to renovate and expand its Center for Manufacturing Excellence (CME) located at the West Campus Technical Center (CTL). The existing laboratory configuration had become outdated, and the limited space did not allow LCC to adequately teach students the equipment related overlap in form and function that occurs in a true manufacturing setting. With the addition of 11,000 SF and a renovation of the original structure, the CME facility now houses programs for Mechatronics, Welding, and CNC with a Machine Lab, Pre-Stage Labs, a Flexible Manufacturing Lab (FML), Welding Simulator Resource Room and a Machine Lab mezzanine that can expand by an additional 840 SF for additional storage.

The Flexible Manufacturing Lab unites the existing labs, allowing students to train on some of the most advanced industrial networking systems in Michigan; with renovated spaces that house a Pre-Stage Lab containing Robotic Welding, Shear, mobile laser and plasma table, and open fabrication space and material storage. To support a longer usable life for this high-tech equipment and ensure continued applicability, HED proposed areas that mirror flexible, advanced manufacturing working environments.
