Lion Safari

Archohm as Architects

The Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica), also known as the Indian lion, is a lion subspecies that exists as a single isolated population in India's Gujarat State. For building a dream project of building a lion safari at Etawah, the government of Uttar Pradesh, approached the Gujarat government to provide Asian breed of lions for a proposed safari park to preserve this endangered species.

Conceptualized as a large safari park, this proposal comes as a tourism and ecological boom to Etawah and the northern Uttar Pradesh vicinity. The Lion safari is a contribution to the wildlife of Uttar Pradesh in the form of a large ecological park accommodating safari facilities and a viewing deck with an intention to become a promising future reserve for lions. Upon entering the safari park, the visitor is greeted by an abstract majestic lion sculpture that immediately sets the tone for a thrilling experience of seeing a wildly roaming lion; a massive gateway manifesting a voided silhouette of the lion sculpture placed at the entrance gives passage into the safari park. This gateway houses necessary information and ticketing facilities with administration and ancillary activities. A large visitor parking is present at the heart of the jungle next to the jeep parking, from where the visitors can hop on and start on their adventure.

As an approach to sustainable development, windmills have been proposed in the park to facilitate electricity generation. A wooden pavilion presents a traditional vernacular architectural addition to the forest land. One of the most engaging features present in the park is the viewing deck proposed at the heart of the jungle where the pride of lions is anticipated to be present. The viewing deck stands over a low heighted ridge that gives the perfect location for a viewing gallery. This gallery being elevated at a considerable height can give an experience of seeing the jungle king very closely yet safely from a closed and comfortable enclosure. In addition to the viewing deck this building also accommodates a restaurant and public toilets.

The entire park has an undulating lay of the land and is covered with trails and a track for jeeping around with the ever-present thrill of running into a lion!
