The Village Sthlm

Kjellander Sjöberg as Architects

The Village Sthlm is a new urban block in the heart of Hammarby Sjöstad, bordering central Stockholm, developed for the client Sjöstadsbo. The project aims to create a new type of dwelling offering a high quality of life, integrated greenery, a sense of community and bustling urban life as well as bringing together inner city urban qualities with suburban recreational features. The point of departure for the design concept was combining the benefits of the traditional Swedish courtyard block with a new, smaller-scale spatial typology, creating a strong local identity. The Village Sthlm comprises 350 residential units, a preschool, meeting places, common spaces for the residents and commercial spaces facing the surrounding streets.

The immediate context of Hammarby Sjöstad has a mixed urban character including new housing units and various types of programs. The block's structure stems from the initiation of a dialogue with its surroundings, clarifying the adjacent public streetscape, and at the same time providing a bright connective courtyard space, suitable for children's play, urban farming and outdoor activities. A diagonal local street links the courtyard to some of the neighbourhood´s public nodes. The perimeter of the block opens to the north through openings and visual connections towards the linear park Östra Heliosparken, whilst creating a central local square, a pre-school playground and activity areas.

The buildings are varied in height with a vertical division of stairwells, expressed in different facades. A rhythm of longer and shorter facades refers both to the inner city as well as to the local industrial character. The roof-scape is used for common green terraces with lounges and urban farming possibilities.

The project is part of a public hearing for a new development plan as part of the Påsen and Godsvagnen blocks in Södra Hammarbyhamnen and is being developed in collaboration with Berg CF Møller Architects and Andersson Jönsson Landscape Architects.
