Located in the park of the Bavarian capital and created for the 1972 Olympic games, the campus houses the Department of Sports and Health Sciences of the Technical University of Munich (TUM).With a slender outline -180m long and 150m wide-the bright and light constuction accomodates sports and lecture halls, offices, research and diagnostic rooms under one roof.
Patios punctuate the centre of the building, bringing natural light inside the compact construction. An impressive 18m timber cantilever partially shelters the outside athletic tracks, enabling highly sensitive sports measurements. the special wooden structure of the cantilever is prefabricated from glulam ribs to form high peformance beams ensuring minimal weight and costs.
Sports halls, institute areas and the complete roof structure are built in timber. Timber was chosen to preserve the link between landscape and achitecture. Timber construction not only allows a high degree of pefabrication but also very short assembly times - the clusters have been set up in just two months.
