Viceroy Chicago

Goettsch Partners as Architects

Located at the intersection of Cedar and State in the heart of Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood, the historic Cedar Hotel will take on a new identity as a Viceroy property.

The four-story brick-and-terra-cotta façade of the original Cedar Hotel will be preserved, fronting a new 18-story hotel tower. Visitors will enter into an open, three-story lobby space with an adjacent restaurant and lounge. Additional amenities include a ballroom and conference suite on Level 4, with access to a large outdoor roof terrace overlooking State Street. The rooftop lounge with outdoor pool and landscaped terrace offers views of Lake Michigan and Chicago skyline.

A unique identity for the Viceroy emerges through the contrasting façades of the new tower and the historic Cedar Hotel. The brick and terra cotta of the original Cedar Hotel exemplifies the traditional, historical notion of a building façade as two-dimensional arrangement of building elements and ornamentation. The Cedar façade is an elevation composition of classical and baroque elements. By contrast, the glass curtain wall of the new hotel tower is a taut three-dimensional envelope. The unique “folding” geometry creates a seamless overall composition without a specific orientation. A secondary material palette of brick and aluminum panel provides a counterpoint to the glass facade.

The Viceroy Hotel will be a unique property at a high-profile intersection in one of Chicago’s most vibrant and rapidly changing neighborhoods.

Material Used :
1. SYP (Glass)
2. Illinois Masonry Corp (Brick)
