Writer at the Machine

element GmbH as Architects

“Writer at the Machine” tells of the encounter between literature and film, radio and internet. Original exhibits are not used in this exhibition. Instead, emphasis is placed on multimedia and interactive presentations of audio installations, film projections and computer workplaces.

The key exhibits, therefore, are not tangible, rather auditive and digital, only to be experienced at the press of a button. In addition written material had to be linked to the multimedia exhibits. For this purpose, a desk is introduced as the central design element, which as a stylized and repetitive object represents the process in creating works of literature. Additionally, it emphasizes the concept of the exhibition, which isn't intended to read as a finished presentation, rather as a layout of chosen examples, still open for interpretation.

The desk as the traditional location of writing here becomes a meeting place for various media and for the literary language as a resulting creative development made possible by such media.

Since original written documentation is not used, secondary objects are provided as facsimiles, which illustrate working processes and methods and allow for a rich tactile and sensual experience.

The graphics system applied directly to the desks links the objects, authors and artists in their heterogeneity and captures them in a spatial and textual context.
