A guide to designing with concrete

Known for its design flexibility and visual appeal, concrete is without a doubt a favoured material -  if not the favourite material - of architects. We’ve taken a look at the evolution of concrete in the field of architecture over the centuries in our Compact History of Concrete. Here, we take a practical look at the use of concrete in current architectural practice and some of the key points to consider when designing with concrete. Colour and Texture: Colour and texture are perhaps two of the biggest ways to make an impact with concrete.   Concrete is of course known and loved for its smooth mid-grey tones. But many projects in latter years have made a statement by adding colourful pigments, including bright red, yello... More

SKY-BLUE MEETS CONCRETE GREY

Kitchen design is diverse – there are probably recipes for kitchen design like sand by the sea. The architects of ILAI GmbH chose two base materials for this kitchen located in a private home: wood and concrete, which form a great contrast.   SKY-BLUE WOODEN FRONTS AND DADE ROC CONCRETE FRONTSThe simple straight-lined aestetics of the furniture contrasts with an asymmetrical worktop. The sky-blue wooden fronts of the boxes – the carpentry team of Timberline and Gregory Clan did a great job here – are a capitvating counterpart to the different colors of the concrete fronts. The seamlessly cast concrete shelves make “una bella figura” from all angles.   OPEN CONCRETE KITCHENThe open kitchen is an ey... More

THE FUTURE OF CONCRETE - INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY

In the past, concrete meant heavy physical work and rough forms. The material wasn’t really considered sexy. In the meantime, architects are designing entire houses inside and outside with this material – the designs are becoming ever more delicate and the colours are more diverse. The technology of the future is 3D – and this development does not halt for concrete. As a pioneer in innovation, dade design is a leader in exploring new applications and is looking for the best partners for joint projects.   MOULDS FROM THE 3D PRINTERFor example, with voxeljet – a manufacturer of innovative 3D printers – we developed moulds in which liquid concrete can be poured that allows us to transfer even the most delic... LIVING WITH DADE CONCRETE DESIGN

The current task of architects and planners is to create straight lined architecture – well thought-out, sustainable and with a high comfort standard. In recent years, concrete as a material has worked its way from the outside to the interior. Concrete comes into its own in its natural and varied colour and structure. No need for plastering. That is why we were particularly pleased to be able to play a major role in a residential project by BGP Architects on Lake Zurich. For almost all living areas – literally from the basement to the roof – dade design created individual furniture from the largely natural material in the concrete factory in Altstätten in the Rhine Valley.   CONCRETE AS A MATERIAL FOR KITCHEN,... dade Surface finish

The basis for every dade design concrete object is our inhouse developed dade ROC high-performance concrete. This concrete is a so called Ultra High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC). Our dade ROC contains gravel with a grain size of a 6 / 8mm from the area of Altstätten and sand from the Rhine delta. Together with an extremely high-performance cement, some chemical additives and fiberglass, we created a concrete that offers nearly perfect surface and material properties and outperforms conventional concrete with a factor of 3-4 (more facts). Since 2016 we produce CO2 neutral. More

A KEBAB CONCRETE PLEASE

Our cuisine is multi-cultural and we can now enjoy food from all over the world within our own cities. If you want to attract attention, you have to come up with something special. The Ayverdi family from the Schlotterbeck area of Zurich did just that. Together with www.slpag.ch they came up with plans for a kebab temple for the modern, quality-conscious, urban public. Concrete was the chosen material to embrace that Urban feeling. Dade design was a partner and produced the individually planned concrete design. The eye-catcher is the 18m long concrete counter, which consists of 5 elements. Thanks to sophisticated concrete cosmetics it appears as a seamless whole. The 24m2 large mural behind the counter is immediately noticeable when ent... More
