Decamerone

The renovation of one of the Teatro degli Arcimboldi dressing room was approached with the awareness of having to create a private space dedicated to meditation, concentration and relaxation.  Simone Furiosi Simone Furiosi While functionality is crucial from a distributive point of view, the transient permanence of a dressing room inhabitants make it possible to propose highly distinctive and daring finishing solutions. Simone Furiosi The choice was oriented towards the creation of a welcoming and intimate environment, characterized by large colored surfaces, which come together through strong chromatic and material contrasts. Since each color corresponds to a function, it can be said that the color was used as an arch... More

Willow Street Apartment

This 1600 SF apartment, located in a 1950’s art deco building in Brooklyn Heights, was not only a full renovation, but also an apartment combination to make an efficient space that could keep up with the busy lives of a family of three – a talent agent, an entrepreneur, and their teenage daughter. Resolution: 4 Architecture Resolution: 4 Architecture Resolution: 4 Architecture The renovation created an open living, dining and kitchen space anchored by a black-steel-clad wall on one end and a white art wall on the other. The kitchen island defines and separates the kitchen and living, with white custom cabinets and a Corian countertop. Black-steel accents are carried throughout, incorporated into a column cover an... Pineapple Street Lobby

The Pineapple Street Lobby project is a complete gut renovation of the main entrance and lobby of an early 1900’s residential co-op building in Brooklyn Heights. Previous renovations had left the cramped, low-lit corridor feeling piecemeal and outdated. Resolution: 4 Architecture The project goal was to transform the disconnected entry vestibule and lobby spaces into a continuous and connective thoroughfare for residents to actively utilize. Early in the design process, probing of the existing conditions led to the discovery of long-ago covered brick walls embedded with remnants of the building’s past. Resolution: 4 Architecture The co-op board’s desire to preserve - and architecturally highlight – the ex... More

Apartment Brussels

This apartment has been a special project. Being a fan of Gustave Strauven’s work, it was an honour to be able to improve the second floor of this charming building. Fully transforming the previous two studios into one apartment circular apartment, around the core. A difficult plan that had no space for a second bedroom and only one small bathroom, became a home with space for storage, a sharing bathroom to two bedrooms and a separate toilet. A spacious kitchen, living room and dining room, by eliminating difficult corners and angles from the previous construction. More

Alto Rodes House Renovation

Situated in Faro, this traditional building represents a very simple renovation that maintains the original character of this type of construction, merely introducing some modern updates to the obsolete infrastructure and a few basic new materials that do not compromise the identity of the house.   All the stone framework and the entrance door were recovered and kept as a reminder of a time long gone, as well as the type of flooring that, despite the fact that it was replaced, it is of the same kind as the initial one. Only the interior doors and a matching white skirting, along with a completely new bathroom and kitchen equipment and design, were imposed by this renewal, in order to complete an idea of duo-tonal contrast continuity... Palo Alto High School Library

Working closely with Palo Alto High School staff and leadership, HED identified key goals for the library renovation: a classic feel with modern finishes. Together, we envisioned a space that would support a wide variety of work styles and activities that featured updated technology, natural light, and a more functional, open layout with clear sightlines and improved circulation patterns. Built in the 1960s, the former library was disjointed, dark, and inefficient. Faculty offices and storage spaces crowded the building’s perimeter, leaving an echoing, two-story column in the building’s center to house the library.   Still contained within its original footprint, the modernized 37,500 square foot building now houses four... Nicholson Dining Commons

Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU), a faith-based liberal arts college, wanted to revive its existing Nicholson Dining Commons to reflect an updated modern dining experience that would meet the needs of the campus for the next twenty years. They sought to provide a comfortable and attractive place to eat, study, collaborate, and build long lasting relationships. With limited options on and off campus for dining and meeting, the importance of providing this space for their 3,500 students was amplified. Some of the university’s objectives were to increase their seat count, expand outdoor usage, and improve their oversized and underutilized lounge area. Nicholson Commons was designed upon the belief that the best conversations happen... More

Wayne State University Chemistry Building

To improve laboratory safety on campus, Wayne State University — a nationally recognized metropolitan research institution located in Midtown Detroit — required a renovation and expansion of its A. Paul Schaap Chemistry Building.  During the first phase of the renovation, modern laboratories and dedicated student spaces were incorporated into the north side of the building to encourage students to leave laboratories during breaks.  To create an open environment, windows between the labs and student spaces where also added to the space.  All of the existing fume hoods on the first and second floors were removed and replaced with new fume hoods, exhaust connections for glove box work and snorkel locations, which represents a fo... University of Cincinnati Medical Sciences Building

HED leads the rehabilitation of the existing Medical Sciences Building, (MSB) in collaboration with STUDIOS Architecture and GPR Planners Collaborative, Inc.  The multi-phased project replaces the older building components and creates a new state-of-the-art learning and research center for the Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy. After the University’s comprehensive analysis was completed, it was determined that the most cost effective way to rehabilitate the 800,000 GSF of the MSB would be to first design and construct a building addition with about 200,000 GSF.  This multi-phase approach would reduce total project costs by allowing existing labs with major design flaws to be redesigned to accommodate new functions with less s... Lansing CC Center for Manufacturing Excellence

U of M Aaron Friedman Marine Hydrodynamics Center

Built in 1904, the hydrodynamics lab at the University of Michigan has provided generations of students with unique tools and experiences. The laboratory’s “tow tank” was the first university-affiliated facility of its kind in the United States and is one of only three on university campuses in the United States. In its 112-year history, the lab has launched some of the most significant innovations in naval architecture, including the fuel-saving “bulbous bow” technology that’s used on large cargo vessels.Today, the hydrodynamics lab is still the largest facility of its kind — used both for teaching and for testing new commercial and military vessel designs. Now, thanks to a substantial renovation, it has been restored to showcase the premi... More
